China Motorcycle Industry: August Sales Dip, Exports Stay Strong

China’s Motorcycle Industry Sees Lower Monthly Production and Sales in August, While Exports Continue to Drive Growth
In August, China’s motorcycle industry recorded month-on-month declines in both production and sales, while maintaining year-on-year growth. Exports continued to provide strong momentum, and the domestic market showed a modest recovery. From January to August, exports remained a major drive of industry growth, the shift toward higher-end products continued steadily, and domestic consumer demand gradually improved, keeping the industry on a broadly positive trajectory.
Production and Sales Performance
In August, the industry produced and sold 1.8059 million and 1.7553 million fuel-powered motorcycles, respectively, representing month-on-month declines of 6.84% and 7.60%, but year-on-year increases of 13.54% and 12.27%. According to incomplete statistics from the industry association, electric motorcycles recorded production of 332,700 units and sales of 348,600 units, with production and sales increasing 0.46% and 8.45% month-on-month, and 9.80% and 16.86% year-on-year.

Total motorcycle production and sales in August reached 2.1385 million and 2.1039 million units, respectively, down 5.78% and 5.27% month-on-month, but up 12.94% and 13.00% year-on-year. China’s motorcycle sales totaled 766,700 units, down 4.33% month-on-month but up 3.92% year on year. China’s sales of fuel-powered motorcycles reached 426,700 units, down 12.00% month-on-month and 3.32% year-on-year.
Among them, two-wheel motorcycle production and sales reached 1.8922 million and 1.8638 million units, respectively, down 7.12% and 6.40% month-on-month, while increasing 14.00% and 14.43% year-on-year. Motorcycles with engine displacements above 250cc recorded production of 130,500 units and sales of 126,600 units, increasing 24.40% and 25.47% month-on-month, and 54.99% and 49.82% year-on-year. Three-wheel motorcycle production and sales reached 220,700 units and 220,000 units, respectively, increasing 3.94% and 4.51% month-on-month, and 0.42% and 0.39% year-on-year.

From January to August, the industry produced 13.8849 million fuel-powered motorcycles and sold 13.8276 million units, representing year-on-year growth of 13.85% and 13.26%. Electric motorcycle production and sales reached 2.6086 million and 2.5662 million units, respectively, increasing 13.06% and 13.10% year-on-year. During the first eight months of the year, total motorcycle production and sales reached 16.4935 million and 16.3937 million units, up 13.72% and 13.23% year-on-year. China’s sales of fuel-powered motorcycles totaled 3.594 million units, an increase of 2.87% year-on-year, indicating a gradual improvement in the domestic market. Two-wheel motorcycle production and sales reached 14.6496 million and 14.5597 million units, respectively, up 15.31% and 14.87% year-on-year. Motorcycles with engine displacements above 250cc recorded production of 738,800 units and sales of 734,200 units, increasing 7.71% and 8.80% year-on-year. Three-wheel motorcycle production and sales reached 1.844 million and 1.8341 million units, up 2.51% and 1.74% year-on-year.
From January to August, the top ten fuel-powered motorcycle manufacturers (groups) by sales volume were Dachangjiang (2,140,700 units), Loncin (1,007,800 units), Tayo (986,400 units), Zongshen (879,900 units), Yinxiang (795,800 units), Sundiro-Honda (753,100 units), Haojin (598,700 units), Wuyang-Honda (483,100 units), Dayang (448,400 units), and Jiangmen Summit (364,000 units). Together, these ten companies sold 8.4579 million motorcycles, accounting for 61.17% of total fuel-powered motorcycle sales.
Export Performance
In August, motorcycle exports reached 1.3372 million units, down 5.81% month-on-month but up 18.97% year-on-year. Export value totaled US$945 million, decreasing 7.61% month-on-month but increasing 24.49% year-on-year. Two-wheel motorcycle exports reached 1.2787 million units, down 6.26% month-on-month but up 19.08% year-on-year. Three-wheel motorcycle exports totaled 58,500 units, increasing 5.21% month-on-month and 16.44% year-on-year.

From January to August, the total export value of products from motorcycle manufacturers reached US$9.035 billion, up 26.18% year-on-year. Complete motorcycle exports totaled 10.2941 million units, an increase of 17.77%, with export value reaching US$7.131 billion, up 23.04%. Motorcycle engine exports totaled 694,000 units, down 19.14% year-on-year, with export value falling 15.04% to US$145 million. ATV exports reached 410,300 units, up 32.02% year-on-year, while export value surged 67.93% to US$1.496 billion. Motorcycle parts exports generated US$262 million, down 13.20% year-on-year.

From January to August, the top 10 companies ranked by motorcycle export value were Dachangjiang, Loncin, Tayo, Yinxiang, Sundiro-Honda, Zongshen, CFMOTO, Haojin, QJMOTOR, and SYM. These 10 companies generated a combined motorcycle export value of US$4.636 billion, accounting for 65.01% of total motorcycle export value.

In terms of export volume, the top 10 companies were Dachangjiang, Loncin, Tayo, Yinxiang, Haojin, Zongshen, Sundiro-Honda, Jiangmen Summit, Lifan, and Bashan. These companies exported a combined 6.3813 million motorcycles, accounting for 61.99% of total motorcycle exports.
