China’s Motorcycle Industry Continued Recovery, with Large Displacement Motorcycles Maintaining Rapid Growth
In July, China’s motorcycle industry continued positive development, with the production and sales volume increasing for three consecutive months, and the year-on-year decline further narrowed. 250cc and above leisure and entertainment motorcycles maintained rapid growth, becoming the main growth point of the motorcycle market since this year.

Production & sales
In July, the production and sales of the whole industry were 2.1389 million and 2.0578 million units, with a month-on-month increase of 6.54% and 0.85%, and a year-on-year decrease of 2.01% and 4.44%. Among them, the production and sales of two-wheeled motorcycles were 1,947,100 units and 1,861,500 units, with a month-on-month increase of 7.56% and 1.25%, and a year-on-year decrease of 2.72% and 5.6%. The production and sales of three-wheeled motorcycles were 191,900 units and 196,300 units, down 2.81% and 2.82% month-on-month, and up 5.78% and 8.19% year-on-year. The production and sales of fuel motorcycles were 1.3058 million and 1.2928 million units, with a month-on-month increase of 3.91% and 2.77%, and a year-on-year decrease of 3.99% and 4.65%. The production and sales of electric motorcycles were 746,200 units and 678,700 units, with the production increasing by 12.84% and the sales decreasing by 2.1%, production and sales decreased by 16.26% and 15.32% year-on-year.

From January to July, the production and sales of the whole industry were 12.6935 million units and 12.7804 million units. The production and sales decreased by 13.57% and 12.92% year-on-year, which narrowed by about 2 percentage points compared with last month. Among them, the production and sales of two-wheel motorcycles were 11,386,400 units and 11,456,100 units, down 14.05% and 13.5% year-on-year; the production and sales of three-wheeled motorcycles were 1.307 million units and 1.324 million units, down 9.19% and 7.56% year-on-yea; the production and sales of fuel motorcycles were 8.1935 million and 8.2687 million units, down 13.04% and 12.52% year-on-year; the production and sales of electric motorcycles were 4.5 million and 4.5117 million units, down 14.54% and 13.64% year-on-year.
From January to July, the production and sales of standard bikes were 4,527,200 units and 4,604,600 units, down 12.73% and 10.91% year-on-year; the production and sales of scooters were 5,887,900 units and 5,937,740 units, down 12.21% and 11.7% year-on-year; the production and sales of cubs were 910,400 units and 907,900 units, down 32.63% and 32.71% year-on-year. In terms of the proportion of the sales of each type in the total sales of two-wheelers, the standard, scooter and cub models accounted for 40.19%, 51.83% and 7.93%, respectively.
From January to July, the production and sales of 50cc series were 332,400 units and 358,900 units, down 36.58% and 30.18% year-on-year; the production and sales of 110cc series were 914,500 units and 934,400 units, down 24.79% and 22.33% year-on-year; the production and sales of 125cc series were 2,979,600 units and 3,012,700 units, down 8.09% and 7.99% year-on-year; the production and sales of 150cc series were 1,747,8 00 units and 1,762,300 units, down 16.27% and 15.56% year-on-year; the production and sales of 250cc series reached 784,900 units and 802,000 units, up 1.97% and 2.83% year-on-year. The production and sales of large displacement motorcycles above 250cc were 278,100 units and 284,200 units, with year-on-year growth of 49.68% and 53.62%.
From January to July, the production and sales of regular three-wheeled motorcycles were 1,306,100 units and 1,323,300 units, down 9.13% and 7.51% year-on-year. Among them, the production and sales of general freight tricycles were 1,039,300 units and 1,055,000 unit, down 16.6% and 14.72% year-on-year; the production and sales of general passenger tricycles were 265,500 units and 267,100 units, with year-on-year growth of 40.28% and 39.29%.
From January to July, the top ten enterprises (groups) in sales of fuel motorcycles were Dachang, Loncin, Zongshen, Sundiro Honda, Wuyang-Honda, Dechengwei (Yinxiang), Dayang, Dayun, Tayo, and Qingqi Suzuki, which sold 1,158,700 units, 712,100 units, 567,800 units, 497,900 units, 406,200 units, 391,200 units, 359,500 units, 302,000 units, 251,400 units and 248,300 units, respectively.
From January to July, the top ten enterprises (groups) in sales of electric motorcycle were Yadea, Luyuan, Tailg, Sunra, Zongshen, Huaihai, Jinyi, Lovol, Bus New Energy, and Loncin, which sold 2,857,100 units, 399,200 units, 392,400 units, 267,100 units, 187,000 units, 96,200 units, 66,300 units, 50,500 units, 50,300 units and 33,500 units, respectively.
Export
In July, motorcycle export showed a continuous good: the export volume increased from the previous month, with further narrowed year-on-year decline. Affected by the increase in raw materials, freight and other costs, the prices of export products rose. In addition, in the past two years, China’s large displacement motorcycle export grew remarkably. motorcycle export was the first to restore growth.

In July, motorcycle exports recorded 729,200 units, a month-on-month increase of 3.84% and a year-on-year decrease of 1.18%; the export value was USD494 million, up 2.68% month-on-month and 5.1% year-on-year. Among them, the export of two-wheeled motorcycles was 690,600 units, up by 4.1% month-on-month and down by 1.36% yea-on-year; the export of three-wheeled motorcycles was 38,600 units, down 0.63% month-on-month and up 2.32% year-on-year.

From January to July, motorcycle manufacturers exported USD4.165 billion of products, up 2.6% year-on-year. The complete motorcycle export was 4.6847 million units, down 9.88% year-o-year; the export value was USD3.256 billion, up 0.61% year-on-year. Motorcycle engine export recorded 580,900 units, down 26.34% year-on-year; the export value was USD133 million, up 4.78% year-on-year. ATVs export totaled 241,800 units, down 18.06% year-on-year, and the export value was USD577 million, up 17.88% year-on-year. The export value of motorcycle parts was USD199 million, down 3.82% year-on-year.
From January to July, the top five series of products in export volume were: 125cc series, 150cc series, 110cc series, 250cc series and 50cc series, recording 1.6769 million units, 1.1378 million units, 646,900 units, 516,700 units and 200,800 units, respectively. The 125cc series decreased by 2.62%, the 150cc series decreased by 12.35%, the 110cc series decreased by 20.01%, the 250cc series increased by 7.35%, and the 50cc series decreased by 38.61%. From January to July, 4.1792 million of the above five series were exported, accounting for 94.89% of the total export of two-wheeled motorcycles. The export of three-wheeled motorcycles was 280,600 units, down 10.16% year-on-year.
Top ten enterprises in export volume from Jan to July
From January to July, the top ten enterprises in export volume were Loncin, Dachangjiang, Zongshen, Sundiro Honda, Tayo, Zongshen, Lifan, Dechengwei, Dayun, Haojin, and Sanya, with a total export volumes of 2.9383 million units, accounting for 62.72% of the total motorcycle exports–an increase of about 2 percentage points compared with the same period last year.
Economic benefit
According to the statistics on 88 motorcycle manufacturing enterprises’ monthly economic indicators, from January to June, motorcycle manufacturing enterprises’ industrial output value, industrial sales output value and operating revenue slightly increased compared with the same period last year. The total profits grew significantly year-on-year.
The total industrial output value and industrial sales output value increased slightly year-on-year. From January to June, the total industrial output value of motorcycle manufacturers reached 65.614 billion yuan, up 6.76% year-on-year; the industrial sales output reached 64.235 billion yuan, up 4.33% year-on-year; the industrial added value reached 9.887 billion yuan, up 5.31% year-on-year. From January to June, the sales-output ratio of motorcycle manufacturers was 97.90%, down 2.28 percentage points year-on-year.
The operating revenue and total profits showed different degrees of growth. From January to June, motorcycle enterprises achieved operating revenue of 72.811 billion yuan, up 1.85% year-on-year; the total profits reached 3.995 billion yuan, up 48.70% year-on-year, and the total profits and taxes were 5.478 billion yuan, up 44.44% year-on-year.
From January to June, the operating cost of motorcycle enterprises was 62.124 billion yuan, up 0.71% year-on-year; taxes and surcharges totaled 635 million yuan, up 21.23% year-on-year; sales expenses totaled 2.044 billion yuan, down 11.69% year-on-year; management cost was 2.775 billion yuan, up 2.16% year-on-year; research and development expenses totaled 2.022 billion yuan, up 15.05% year-on-year; financial expenses recorded -430 million yuan, down 334.57% year-on-year. The four expenses totaled 6.411 billion yuan, down 8.04% year-on-year.
