Strong Export Momentum Drives Steady Growth of China’s Motorcycle Industry in Q1

In March, China’s motorcycle industry achieved a notable year-on-year and month-on-month growth in both production and sales, with foreign trade exports maintaining a high growth rate. Cumulative data for the first quarter shows that driven strongly by the export market, industrial production and sales rose steadily, and the overall industry maintained a sound development momentum.
Production and Sales Performance
In March, the industry produced 1.7321 million fuel motorcycles and sold 1.6561 million units, up 58.91% and 35.63% month on month, and rising 7.81% and 4.96% year on year. According to incomplete statistics from the industry chamber, electric motorcycle production reached 371,200 units with sales of 378,000 units, surging 234.55% and 214.23% month on month; output fell 1.14% year on year while sales increased 3.51% year on year. Total motorcycle production and sales in March stood at 2.1033 million units and 2.0341 million units, growing 75.13% and 51.65% month on month, and rising 6.12% and 4.69% year on year. Domestic motorcycle sales hit 850,800 units, up 126.17% month on month and 0.67% year on year. Domestic sales of fuel motorcycles were 479,100 units, an increase of 80.94% month on month and a drop of 0.85% year on year.

Among the total, two-wheeled motorcycles recorded production and sales of 1.832 million units and 1.771 million units, up 71.06% and 47.18% month on month, and 6.94% and 5.91% year on year. Motorcycles with a displacement above 250ml (exclusive) registered production and sales of 78,500 units and 77,700 units, rising 100.77% and 69.28% month on year, while declining 11.2% and 11.8% year on year. Three-wheeled motorcycles achieved production and sales of 271,300 units and 263,100 units, up 108.64% and 90.65% month on month; output grew 0.89% year on year whereas sales dropped 2.83% year on year.
From January to March, the industry produced 4.5241 million fuel motorcycles and sold 4.6035 million units, a year-on-year increase of 11.35% and 12.37%. Electric motorcycle production and sales were 799,800 units and 791,400 units, down 5.79% and 5.68% year on year. Total motorcycle production and sales in the first quarter reached 5.324 million units and 5.3949 million units, up 8.39% and 9.3% year on year. Domestic sales of fuel motorcycles amounted to 1.1535 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 2.14%. Specifically, two-wheeled motorcycle production and sales were 4.7001 million units and 4.7743 million units, growing 9.49% and 10.7% year on year. Output and sales of motorcycles above 250ml (exclusive) hit 183,200 units and 187,400 units, down 11.84% and 8.5% year on year. Three-wheeled motorcycle production and sales were 623,800 units and 620,500 units; output rose 0.77% year on year while sales fell 0.42% year on year.

From January to March, the top 10 10 fuel motorcycle sales companies (groups) were Dachangjiang(715,900 units), Loncin(340,700 units), Yinxiang(323,000 units), Tayo(308,500 units), Zongshen(298,000 units), Sundiro-Honda(230,900 units), Haojin(183,500 units), Dayang(146,700 units), Wuyang- Honda(133,300 units) and Lifan(110,500 units).
Export Performance
Motorcycle exports in March reached 1.1833 million units, up 22.6% month on month and 7.79% year on year; export value stood at 791 million US dollars, rising 17.96% month on month and 8.69% year on year. Among them, two-wheeled motorcycle exports were 1.1256 million units, an increase of 22.89% month on month and 8.3% year on year. Three-wheeled motorcycle exports hit 57,600 units, up 17.2% month on month and down 1.41% year on year.

From January to March, the total export value of motorcycle manufacturers’ products reached 2.906 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 22.86%. Motorcycle exports amounted to 3.4737 million units, up 18.66% year on year, with an export value of 2.325 billion US dollars, rising 21.52% year on year. Motorcycle engine exports were 250,400 units, down 22.41% year on year, with an export value of 54 million US dollars, a year-on-year decline of 12.98%. ATV exports reached 129,200 units, surging 31.45% year on year, with an export value of 421 million US dollars, up 48.21% year on year. The export value of motorcycle parts and components was 106 million US dollars, a slight year-on-year increase of 0.18%.

From January to February, the top 10 companies by motorcycle export value were Dachangjiang, Loncin, Tayo, Yinxiang, Zongshen, Sundiro-Honda, CFMOTO, QJMOTOR, Haojin and SYM. The total motorcycle export value of the ten enterprises reached 1.515 billion US dollars, accounting for 65.16% of the overall motorcycle export value.
