In May, China’s motorcycle industry recorded year-on-year growth in both production and sales, although month-on-month figures declined. Exports continued to maintain strong growth momentum and remained a key driver of industry performance. Looking at the January-May period, exports continued to provide stable support while domestic sales showed signs of improvement, helping the industry achieve steady gains in production and sales and maintain overall stable and positive development.

Production and Sales Performance

In May, the industry produced and sold 1.8886 million and 1.8365 million fuel-powered motorcycles, respectively. Production increased by 0.27% month-on-month, while sales declined by 2.72% month-on-month, representing year-on-year growth of 18.77% and 13.85%, respectively. According to incomplete statistics from CCCM (China Chamber of Commerce for Motorcycle), electric motorcycle production and sales reached 329,300 and 315,100 units, down 16.69% and 17.87% month-on-month, but up 14.33% and 7.24% year-on-year. Total motorcycle production and sales in May reached 2.218 million and 2.1516 million units, down 2.67% and 5.28% month-on-month, while increasing 18.09% and 12.83% year-on-year. Domestic motorcycle sales totaled 800,600 units, down 10.95% month-on-month but up 6.55% year-on-year. Domestic sales of fuel-powered motorcycles reached 493,300 units, down 5.49% month-on-month and up 7.02% year-on-year.

Among them, two-wheeled motorcycle production and sales reached 1.9827 million and 1.9165 million units, down 1.03% and 4.02% month-on-month but up 21.37% and 15.40% year-on-year. Production and sales of motorcycles with engine displacements above 250cc (excluding 250cc) reached 104,600 and 102,000 units, with production increasing 0.3% month-on-month and sales declining 1.5% month-on-month, while growing 4.08% and 0.8% year-on-year, respectively. Three-wheeled motorcycle production and sales reached 235,300 and 235,100 units, down 14.63% and 14.44% month-on-month and down 3.81% and 4.5% year-on-year.

From January to May, the industry produced and sold 8.2963 million and 8.3279 million fuel-powered motorcycles, up 12.09% and 12.15% year-on-year, respectively. Electric motorcycle production and sales reached 1.5245 million and 1.4902 million units, up 6.47% and 5.2% year-on-year. Total motorcycle production and sales reached 9.8208 million and 9.8181 million units, representing year-on-year growth of 11.18% and 11.04%, respectively. Domestic sales of fuel-powered motorcycles totaled 2.1688 million units, up 0.6% year-on-year, indicating a gradual recovery in the domestic market. Among them, two-wheeled motorcycle production and sales reached 8.6861 million and 8.6877 million units, up 12.59% and 12.53% year-on-year. Production and sales of motorcycles above 250cc reached 392,200 and 393,000 units, down 3.23% and 1.5% year-on-year, respectively. Three-wheeled motorcycle production and sales reached 1.1347 million and 1.1304 million units, up 1.47% and 0.79% year-on-year.

From January to May, the top ten fuel-powered motorcycle manufacturers (groups) by sales volume were Dachangjiang(1,239,900 units), Loncin(597,600 units), Tayo(595,900 units), Yinxiang(539,000 units), Zongshen(531,700 units), Sundiro-Honda(426,900 units), Haojin(337,800 units), Dayang(284,700 units), Wuyang-Honda(269,500 units), and Jiangmen Summit(225,900 units). Together, these ten companies sold 5.0488 million motorcycles, accounting for 60.62% of total fuel-powered motorcycle sales.

Export Performance

In May, motorcycle exports reached 1.351 million units, down 1.57% month-on-month but up 16.91% year-on-year. Export value totaled USD 936 million, up 1.98% month-on-month and 20.7% year-on-year. Among them, exports of two-wheeled motorcycles reached 1.2923 million units, down 1.05% month-on-month but up 18.04% year-on-year, while exports of three-wheeled motorcycles totaled 58,700 units, down 11.65% month-on-month and 3.41% year-on-year.

From January to May, the total export value of products from motorcycle manufacturers reached USD 5.26 billion, up 22.74% year-on-year. Complete motorcycle exports totaled 6.1973 million units, up 17.29% year-on-year, with export value reaching USD 4.178 billion, up 20.7% year-on-year. Motorcycle engine exports totaled 431,400 units, down 21.57% year-on-year, with export value of USD 87 million, down 20.14% year-on-year. ATV exports reached 234,800 units, up 35.5% year-on-year, with export value reaching USD 833 million, an increase of 60.73% year-on-year. Motorcycle parts exports totaled USD 161 million, down 17.87% year-on-year.

From January to May, the top ten companies by motorcycle export value were Dachangjiang, Loncin, Tayo, Yinxiang, Sundiro-Honda, Zongshen, CFMOTO, Haojin, QJMOTOR, and SYM. These ten companies generated motorcycle export revenue of USD 2.692 billion, accounting for 64.43% of total motorcycle export value.

From January to May, the top ten companies by motorcycle export volume were Dachangjiang, Loncin, Yinxiang, Tayo, Haojin, Zongshen, Sundiro-Honda, Jiangmen Summit, Lifan, and Bashan. Together, these ten companies exported 3.8336 million motorcycles, accounting for 61.86% of the industry’s total motorcycle exports.
