After the peak sales season in September, China’s motorcycle production and sales saw a month-on-month decline in October, but still in the growth trend. Overseas markets recovered steadily and exports grew significantly year-on-year. The overall decline in production and sales continued to narrow compared with the same period last year.

Production & sales

In October, the whole industry production and sales were 1,572,100 units and 1,561,300 units, with a month-on-month decrease of 15.96% and 16.53% and year-on-year growth of 4.65% and 6.95%, respectively. Among them, the production and sales of two-wheeled motorcycles were 1,353,300 units and 1,349,200 units, down 17.53% and 17.86% month-on-month and up 2.52% and 5.54% year-on-year; the production and sales of three-wheeled motorcycles were 218,800 units and 212,100 units, down 4.76% and 6.9% month on month and up 20.05% and 16.9% year-on-year. The production and sales of fuel motorcycles reached 1,294,400 units and 1,304,000 units, down 12.66% and 12.16% month-on-month and up 3.64% and 7.63% year-on-year, while that of electric motorcycles were 197,300 units and 187,000 units, down 36.13% and 40.26% month-on-month, with output up 2.3% and sales down 1.76% year-on-year.

From January to October, the entire industry recorded motorcycle production and sales of 13,765,400 units and 13,830,700 units, a year-on-year decline of 1.83% and 0.66%, a narrowed decline of about 1 percentage point compared with the previous month. Among them, the production and sales of two-wheeled motorcycles reached 11,969,100 units and 12,043,700 units, with a year-on-year decline of 3.53% and 2.11% respectively; the production and sales of three-wheeled motorcycles reached 1,796,300 units and 1,787,000 units, up 11.27% and 10.36% year on year, an expanded growth of about 1 percentage point over the previous month.

From January to October, the production and sales of fuel motorcycles reached 11.2509 million units and 11.344 million units, down 7.56% and 6.12% year on year, a narrowed decline of about 1.5 percentage points compared with the previous month, while that of electric motorcycles were 1,992,800 units and 1,978,100 units, with year-on-year growth of 33.27% and 33.38%.

From January to October, the production and sales of standard bikes were 6,059,900 units and 6,087,400 units, decreasing 11.02% and 10.04% year on year, a narrowed decrease of about 1 percentage point compared with the previous month. The production and sales of scooters totaled 4.249 million units and 4.2813 million units, up 15.64% and 18.1% year-on-year. The production and sales of cubs totaled 1,660,300 units and 1,674,800 units, down 13.63% and 12.38% year-on-year. The sales of standard bikes, scooters and cubs respectively accounted for 50.54%, 35.54% and 13.06% of the total sales of two-wheeled motorcycles. Compared with the same period the year before, standard bikes fell by 4.4%, scooters increased by 6.1%, and cubs fell by 1.6%.

From January to October, the production and sales of electric two-wheelers were 1,992,800 units and 1,978,100 units, with a year-on-year growth of 33.27% and 33.38%, respectively.

From January to October, the production and sales of right three-wheeled motorcycles were 1,793,600 units and 1,784,300 units, with year-on-year growth of 12.44% and 10.3%. Among them, the production and sales of cargo three-wheeled motorcycles were 1,588,100 units and 1,581,400 units, up 11.02% and 10.54% year-on-year; the production and sales of passenger three-wheeled motorcycles were 204,800 units and 202,200 units, increasing by 12.44% and 8.14% year-on-year. From January to October, the sales of general passenger tricycles accounted for 11.33% of the total sales of three-wheeled motorcycles, while that of cargo tricycles accounted for 88.63% of the total sales.

From January to October, the top ten motorcycle enterprises in sales were Dachangjiang, Zongshen, Lifan, Yinxiang, Wuyang-Honda, Dayang, Luyuan, Sundiro-Honda, Sunra, with respective sales of 1,581,500, 934,000, 857,000, 719,700, 659,800, 631,800, 600,200, 565,900, 538,100 and 469,200 units. These ten enterprises have sold a total of 7,557,200 units, accounting for about 54.64% of the total motorcycle sales.

Export

In October, although the overseas epidemic situation was still unclear, the overseas sales of Chinese motorcycles maintained the trend of recovery. The motorcycle export increased significantly year on year, with narrowed decline in cumulative export volume.

In October, the export of complete motorcycles was 672,300 units, down 13.36% month-on-month and up 23.3% year on year; the export value was USD394 million, down 7.47% month-on-month and up by 30.66% year-on-year. Among them, 630,100 two-wheeled motorcycles were exported, down 13.63% month-on-month and up 22.22% year-on-year. A total of 41,600 three-wheeled motorcycles were exported, down 9.12% month-on-month and up 42.26% year-on-year.

From January to October, the total export volume of motorcycle manufacturers was USD3.809 billion, down 3.56% year on year. The export volume of complete vehicles was 5.525 million units, down 4.52% year-on-year, with an export value of USD3.142 billion, down 4.99% from the same period last year. The export volume of motorcycle engines was 1,036,400 units, down 10.55% year on year, with an export value of USD163 million, down 0.4% from a year earlier. 200,000 ATVs were exported, with an export value of USD342 million, up 31.71% year-on-year. Motorcycle parts exports totaled USD163 million, down 26% year on year.

From January to October, the top ten enterprises in terms of motorcycle export volume were Loncin, Dachangjiang, Yinxiang, Zongshen, Lifan, Dayun, Haojin, Tayo, Sundiro-Honda, and Dayang. These ten enterprises exported a total of 3,361,900 million motorcycles, accounting for 60.85% of the total motorcycle export volume.

Economic effectiveness

From January to September, the total industrial output value of motorcycle manufacturers reached 70.188 billion yuan, up 1.51% year-on-year; the industrial sales value was 71.184 billion yuan, up 2.55% year on year; the industrial added value reached 14.149 billion yuan, up 13.08% year-on-year.

From January to September, the sales-output ratio of motorcycle manufacturers was 101.42%, 1.02 percentage points higher than the same period of last year, and 0.72 percentage points higher than that in January-August.

From January to September, motorcycle manufacturers achieved revenue of 76.666 billion yuan, a year-on-year growth of 0.38%; the total profit was 2.931 billion yuan, down 1.99% year on year and 1.90% more drop than that from January to August; the total profits and taxes reached 4.629 billion yuan, down 0.90% year-on-year.

From January to September, the operating costs of motorcycle manufacturers reached 69.711 billion yuan, up 0.68% year-on-year. The taxes and surcharges were 627 million yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 6.32%; sales expenses were 2.573 billion yuan, down 3.22% year-on-year; administrative expenses were 3.544 billion yuan, down 0.84% year-on-year; R&D expenses were 1.927 billion yuan, up 5.48% year-on-year; financial expenses were 784 million yuan, up 44.43% year on year.
