Production & Sales of Motorcycle Industry in 2022
In 2022, China’s motorcycle industry faced complex and severe situations, with domestic and international demand contracted and production and sales declined year-on-year. Especially after July, the foreign trade market saw a greater-than-expected decline, causing a tremendous impact on the industry. There were still development highlights in he industry. The leisure and entertainment motorcycle market developed rapidly, and the motorcycles with displacement above 250cc continued to maintain a high speed growth. The domestic brands’ large-displacement motorcycles have been recognized by consumers with increasing market share, becoming the new growth engine of the industry.
From January to December, the whole industry recorded fuel motorcycle production and sales of 13.681 million units and 13.787 million units, down 16.75% and 16.14% year-on-year; the production and sales of electric motorcycles were 7.610 million and 7.632 million, down 14.86% and 14.46% year-on-year. From January to December, motorcycle production and sales totaled 21.292 million units and 21.420 million units, down 16.08% and 15.55% year-on-year. Among them, the production and sales of the two-wheeled motorcycles reached 19.011 million and 19.131 million, down 16.94% and 16.42%; The production and sales of large-displacement recreational motorcycles (displacement above 250cc, excluding 250cc) were 551,100 units and 553,400 units, with year-on-year growth of 47.51% and 44.68%. The production and sales of three-wheeled motorcycles were 2.281 million and 2.288 million, down 8.2% and 7.45% year-on-year.
Details of the two-wheeled motorcycles: In December, among the three major types, the production and sales of standard bikes were 607,700 units and 630,200 units, with a month-on-month growth of 11.68% and 17.18%, and a year-on-year decline of 23.51% and 25.82%; The production and sales of scooters were 725,500 units and 721,600 units (about 70% were electric scooters), with a month-on-month growth of 11.94% and 17.25%, and a year-on-year decline of 5.21% and 2.47%; The production and sales of cubs were both 122,900 units, with a month-on-month growth of 47.39% and 44.25%, and a year-on-year decline of 34.27% and 33.25%.
From January to December, the production and sales of 50cc series were 544,600 units and 583,700 units, down 33.82% and 28.41% year-on-year. The production and sales of 110cc series were 1.469 million units and 1.520 million units, down 30.62% and 27.83% year-on-year. The production and sales of 125cc series were 4.903 million and 4.936 million, down 14.35% and 14.02% year-on-year. The production and sales of 150cc series were 3.005 million and 3.014 million, down 17.95% and 17.69% year-on-year. The production and sales of the 250cc series were 1.339 million units and 1.352 million units, down 3.91% and 2.96% year-on-year. The production and sales of motorcycles with displacement above 250cc (excluding 250cc) were 551,100 units and 553,400 units, with year-on-year growth of 47.51% and 44.68%…….
Details of motorcycle enterprises (groups) from January to December: the top ten enterprises (groups) in fuel motorcycle sales were Dachangjiang, Loncin, Honda Sundiro, Zongshen, Wuyang-Honda, Dayang, Yinxiang, Dayun, Tayo, and Lifan, with sales of 1,919,400 units, 1,183,000 units, 926,600 units, 887,000 units, 679,700 units, 590,800 units, 570,900 units, 521,200 units, 454,300 units and 415,600 units, respectively.
From January to December, the top ten enterprises (groups) in electric motorcycle sales were Yadea, Luyuan, Tailg, Sunra, Zongshen, Huaihai, Bashi New Energy, Jinyi, Lovol, Loncin, with sales reaching 4,671,800 units, 709,800 units, 708,200 units, 462,900 unit, 358,300 units, 178,600 unit, 105,900 units, 98,600 units, 79,300 units and 60,200 units, respectively.
II Export of Motorcycle Enterprises
In 2022, the international economic situation was complex and volatile, with frequent exchange rate fluctuation, high inflation in some economies, and weakening international demand. At the same time, the Covid-19 impact in China affected the production and operation of some enterprises. Overall, the quantity and value of motorcycle exports were lower than 2021. In December, with optimized epidemic prevention and control, the enterprises resumed normal production and operation gradually. The export of complete motorcycles increased significantly month-on-month, and the year-on-year decline narrowed significantly compared with the previous month.
The overall situation in December: motorcycle export totaled 638,800 units, a month-on-month growth of 22.88% and year-on-year decline of 24.3%, with the export value reaching USD414 million, up 18.25% month-on-month and down 29.8% year-on-year. Among them, the export of two-wheeled motorcycles was 613,100 units, with a month-on-month growth of 25.37% and a year-on-year decline of 23.57%; the export of three-wheeled motorcycles was 25,800 units, with a month-on-month decline of 16.5% and a year-on-year decline of 38.3%…….
From January to December, the total export volume of motorcycle manufacturers was USD6.81 billion, down 7.11% year-on-year. The total export volume of complete motorcycles was USD7.644 million, down 16.06% year-on-year, and the export value was USD5.297 billions, down 9.2% year-on-year. The export of motorcycle engines was 880,400 units, down 32.95% year-on-year, and the export value was USD202 million, down 3.72% year-on-year. The export of ATVs was 401,400 units, down 22.29% year-on-year, and the export value was USD991 million, up 4.77% year-on-year. The export of motorcycle parts amounted to USD320 million, down 6.55% year-on-year…….
From January to December, the top ten enterprises in motorcycle export were Loncin, Dachangjiang, Zongshen, Sundiro Honda, Tayo, Lifan, Dayun, Haojin, Yinxiang (Dechengwei) and SYM. The above ten enterprises exported 4.794 units totally, accounting for 62.72% of the total export of motorcycles.
