The Domestic Large Displacement Motorcycles Multiply, Rise Era Has Come!
This year is quite different from previous years. There are much more reports about domestic brands. Before the year of 2010, the motorcycle with 250 displacement was large one in China, and there were very few of them. Till 2021, there have been at least 30 domestic motorcycles with large displacement over 500cc. The rise era has finally come!
The history of motorcycles in China can be traced back to 1951. Based on the German Zündapp K500 motorcycle, the first two-cylinder four-stroke 500cc motorcycle was imitated, called Jinggangshan. And then, the domestic brands had gradually stepped toward the pinnacle of success.
On 10th December 1981, JIALING signed “JH8101 Technical Cooperation Contract” with Honda. From then on, JIALING motorcycles have galloped across the Chinese land. In 1995, the annual production and sales of JIALING motorcycle reached 1,108,500 units which became the first enterprise to break through the milestone of 1,000,000 units in Chinese motorcycle industry.
The production of domestic motorcycles didn’t break through 1,000,000 units until 1997. With the rising level of residents’ consumption level and the fierce price war, motorcycles have become affordable transportation tools for everyone. As domestic brands exported to Southeast Asia began to fight with each other, sales of domestic motorcycles exported to Asia and Africa had also decreased year by year.
According to the statistical data of the white paper on Chinese motorcycles in 2020, domestic motorcycle sales have dropped from 23.6507 to 15.3753 million units, declined by 35 percent since 2012. Domestic long-established motorcycle enterprises had fallen down one by one. In addition to the failure of domestic motorcycles in southeast Asian market in recent years, the golden era of motorcycle industry seemed to have gone forever.
At this time, domestic brands have begun to cooperate with foreign brands in the way of joint venture such as LONCIN and BMW motorcycle engine cooperation, QJMOTOR and Benelli joint venture Qianjiang Benelli, CFMOTO and KTM joint venture, and so on.
However, it is better to have our own. Lack of core technology means lack of competitiveness. When domestic brands gradually realize that core technology is competitiveness, more and more domestic brands begin to increase investment in technology. In this year’s CIMAMotor, the biggest attraction is that all flowers are in bloom. From 4 valves to liter, the feeling of brands competing against each other is finally coming!
We are very glad to see that domestic brands have begun from simply making and selling motorcycle to making products, telling stories and service, from one-off sale to taking root into hearts of users more deeply through full-chain services.
