In 2021, China’s motorcycle production and sales has recovered 20 million again which has reached the best level since 2014. Domestic sales are stable and rising. The beneficial complementary role of motorcycles in the transportation system has been recognized by the society and the number of people who use motorcycles as urban travel transportation and leisure and entertainment tools is gradually expanding. The effective control of the pandemic by the state has supported the vigorous development of China’s motorcycle foreign trade business, and China’s motorcycle exports have maintained a high boom throughout the year.

1. Production and sales

 In December, the production and sales of the whole motorcycle industry are 1.7 million and 1.75 million, the production ratio has decreased 0.88% month on month, the sales ratio has increased 5.33% month on month and the ration has decreased 2.9% and 0.05% year on year. Among them, the production and sales of two-wheeled motorcycles are 1,514,200 and 1,562,500, the production ratio has decreased 0.18% month on month, the sales ratio has increased 6.42% month on month. The production has decreased 2.16% year on year and the sales has increased 1.26% year on year. The production and sales of tricycle are 187,200 and 187,600 which has decreased 6.23% and 2.93% month on month and 8.51% and 9.78% year on year. The production and sales of fuel motorcycles are 1,398,500 and 1,448,000.

The production ratio has decreased 1.15% month on month and 2.84% year on year and the sales ratio has increased 6.52% month on month and 1.19% year on year. The production and sales of electric motorcycles are 303,000 and 302,100. The production ratio has increased 0.38% month on month and decreased 3.17% year on year, the sales ratio has decreased 0.01% month on month and decreased 5.6% year on year.

From January to December, the whole industry has completed the production and sales of 20195,200 and 20194,800 with a year-on-year increase of 12.98% and 12.7%. Of these, 17.8475 million and 17.8547 million two-wheeled motorcycles were produced and sold, an increase of 14.01% and 13.76% year-on-year; 2.3477 million and 2.3401 million three-wheeled motorcycles were produced and sold, an increase of 5.76% and 5.21% year-on-year. The production and sales of fuel motorcycles were 16.2363 million and 16.252 million, an increase of 15.52% and 15.21% year-on-year; the production and sales of electric motorcycles were 3.9589 million and 3.9428 million, an increase of 3.65% and 3.43% year-on-year. Domestic sales of 11.1221 million motorcycles, an increase of 3.62% year-on-year.

In December, from the perspective of model details, among the three major models, the production and sales of straddle were 790,900 and 845,700 with a month-on-month decrease of 1.58%, sales volume increased by 7.71% month-on-month, production decreased by 6.43% year-on-year, and sales increased by 1.13% year-on-year. The production and sales of scooters were 536,400 and 532,600 with a month-on-month decrease of 0.35%, sales increased by 5.53% month-on-month, an increase of 13.04% and 9.21% year-on-year. The production and sales of cub were 187,000 and 184,200 with a month-on-month increase of 6.58% and 3.24 %, a year-on-year decrease of 17.94% and 15.93%.

From January to December, the production and sales of straddle were 9,090,900 and 9,097,400 with an increase of 18.76% and 18.68% year-on-year. The production and sales of scooter were 6,471,000 and 6,478,400 with an increase of 9.58% year-on-year; and the production and sales of cub were 2,278,500 and 2,227,700 with an increase of 9% and 8.42% year-on-year. Judging from the proportion of the sales volume of each model in the total sales volume of two-wheeler vehicles, the proportion of straddle, scooter and cub models are 50.95%, 36.28% and 12.75% respectively.

From January to December, the production and sales of the 50 series were 782,400 and 776,300 with an increase of 17.37% and 17.08% year-on-year. The production and sales of 110 series were 2,118,400 and 2,106,800 with an increase of 7.81% and 6.26% year-on-year. The production and sales of the 125 series were 5,715,800 and 5,732,700 with an increase of 21.18% and 20.66% year-on-year. The 150 series production and sales were 3,647,200 and 3,646.700 with an increase of 20.9% and 19.74% year-on-year. The 250 series production and sales were 1,370,300 and 1,372,300 with an increase of 16.86% and 18.68% year-on-year.

From January to December, top 10 enterprises in fuel motorcycles sales are Dachangjiang, Locin, Zongshen, Lifan, Sundiro-Honda, Yinxiang, Wuyang-Honda, Northern, Dayun and Tayo with the sales of 2,343,900, 1,288,600, 988,300, 972,400, 895,800, 814,600, 799,500, 716,300, 539,400 and 508,600.

From January to December, top 10 enterprises in electric motorcycles sales are Yadea, Luyuan, Tailg, SUNRA, Zongshen, Jinyi, Huaihai, HAIBAO, Dalong and Locin with the sales of 934,400, 699,100, 619,700, 501,900, 375,800, 200,100, 122,800, 109,400, 98,200 and 41,400.

2. Export

In December, China’s motorcycle exports remained high, it was growing year-on-year for three consecutive months. In the whole year, about 9 million vehicles were exported, reaching a record level.

In December, the export of whole motorcycles was 834,600, an increase of 4.91% month-on-month and 3.2% year-on-year; the export amount was 582 million dollar with an increase of 6.07% month-on-month and 21.16% year-on-year. Among them, 796,400 two-wheeled motorcycles were exported with an increase of 4.45% month-on-month and 4.93 percent year-on-year; 38,300 tricycles were exported with an increase of 15.39% month-on-month and a year-on-year decrease of 23.15%.

From January to December, the total exports of motorcycle manufacturers’ products were 7.28 billion dollar with an increase of 45.73% year-on-year. The total vehicle export was 8.9746 million with an increase of 26.57% year-on-year; the export was 5.77 billion dollar with an increase of 41.62% year-on-year. The export of motorcycle engines was 1.31,300 units with a year-on-year decrease of 4.65%. The export was 209 million dollar with a year-on-year decrease of 1.5%. ATV exported 445,300 vehicles with an increase of 64.99% year-on-year, and exports amounted to 898 million dollar with an increase of 96.53% year-on-year. Motorcycle parts exports amounted to 341 million dollar with an increase of 62.68% year on year.

From January to December, the top five varieties in export were 125 series, 150 series, 110 series, 250 series and 50 series, exporting 303,400, 2,296,700, 1,145,300, 873,400 and 478,200. It increased by 29.66%, 31.61%, 16.34%, 34.33% and 16.99% respectively year on year. From January to December, a total of export of the above 5 series was 8,067,000, accounting for 94.78% of the total exports of two-wheeled motorcycles. The export of tricycles is 463,000 with an increase of 7.96% year-on-year.

From January to December, top 10 enterprises in motorcycle export were Locin, Dachangjiang, Zongshen, Tayo, Sundiro-Honda, Yinxiang, Lifan, Haojin, Sanya, Dayun. The total export of the above enterprises is 5,520,300, accounting for 61.51% of the total motorcycle export.

3. Economic benefits

According to the statistics of the monthly economic index express for 92 motorcycle manufacturers across the country, from January to November, the total industrial output value, industrial sales output value, operating income and total profit of motorcycle manufacturers continued to rise year-on-year.

The total industrial output value and industrial sales output value continued to rise in double digits. From January to November, motorcycle manufacturers completed a total industrial output value of 12.562 billion yuan, an increase of 20.98% year-on-year; an industrial sales output value of 12.332 billion yuan, an increase of 19.12% year-on-year and an industrial added value of 18.144 billion yuan, an increase of 4.66% year-on-year.

From January to November, the production and sales rate of motorcycle manufacturers was 98.18%, a year-on-year decrease of 1.53% points.

Operating income and total profit have increased. From January to November, motorcycle manufacturers achieved operating income of 13.753 billion yuan, an increase of 19.87% year-on-year; total profit was 5.575 billion yuan, an increase of 11.4.79% year-on-year, and total interest and tax revenue was 7.790 billion yuan, an increase of 53.04% year-on-year.

From January to November, the operating expenses of motorcycle manufacturers were 11.8,034 billion yuan, an increase of 22.32% year-on-year; taxes and surcharges were 1.057 billion yuan, an increase of 16.48% year-on-year; sales expenses were 4.195 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 4.65%; and management expenses were 5.180 billion yuan, an increase of 1.86% year-on-year. R&D expenditure was 3.605 billion yuan, an increase of 17.95% year-on-year; financial expenditure was 394 million yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 85.23 percent. The total cost of the four items was 13.374 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 12.05%.
